Check the filters about once a month during heavy-use seasons. Homes with pets, smokers, frequent open windows, or nearby agricultural dust may need to check them more often. A gentle rinse with a garden hose can sometimes remove surface dust from the exterior coil, but only when the power is off and the water pressure is low. Never use a pressure washer. High pressure can flatten the fins and restrict airflow. If the coil looks packed with grime, professional coil cleaning will do a better job without risking damage.
Use Settings That Reduce Wear
Good maintenance includes how the system is operated. Set a reasonable temperature and allow the mini-split to maintain it instead of making large, repeated adjustments. In winter, avoid turning the temperature far above normal in an effort to heat a room faster. Most systems will not heat faster. They will simply run longer.
Use the fan setting recommended for normal operation, often Auto, unless your installer has advised otherwise. Keep the remote control batteries fresh and make sure each indoor head responds correctly. If one room is consistently uncomfortable, the issue may be a setting, a blocked filter, an undersized unit, poor insulation, or a door that is frequently left open.
